Why is Southend-on-Sea the place to be?

As The Mirror pointed out in their recent article about why Southend-on-Sea has become “a magnet for British and foreign visitors”, we’re not technically beside the seaside as the water at City Beach is the Thames estuary. However, plenty of day-trippers continue to return to Southend-on-Sea for a sunny weekend, with more and more people looking to make a more permanent trip and buy property here.

If you’re contemplating a move to sunny Southend, you may be enticed by one of the area’s many attractions, including the beautiful waterfront, active civic theatres or historical local parks. Perhaps overlooked in the past, the Southend area is starting to be recognised as a diverse and vibrant place to live, especially for those who desire more affordable home prices and easy access to the city.

Here are just a few of the many features that are drawing people from elsewhere in the UK to call Southend-on-Sea their new home.

City Beach and the Promenade

Southend's main beach area, City Beach, is a bustling place at the first sign of fair weather. In addition to the beautiful beach itself, it boasts the longest pleasure pier in the world. Other features are the "golden mile" of restaurants, arcades and attractions, the Sea Life Adventure Aquarium, the Southend Marine Activities Centre and the popular theme park, Adventure Island.

Adventure Island

Recently voted the third best theme park in Britain by TripAdvisor, Adventure Island features more than 60 rides and attractions. The latest addition to their collection of heart-racing rides, 'Rage', is currently gaining international attention. Rated by Blue Peter as the most thrilling rolling coaster in Britain, it's attracting more than 170 members of the American Coaster Enthusiasts to test it out on their UK tour.

Whether you're a keen roller coaster fanatic, just like a bit of excitement or think it's a great place to take the kids on a Saturday, Adventure Island may yet be another reason why you'll enjoy life in Southend-on-Sea.

Southend Culture

Don't let talk of arcades and amusement parks deter you; there's even more on offer in Southend-on-Sea. If you'd rather visit a museum or art gallery than a casino, you'll not be bored in this part of Essex. Be sure to stop by Southend Museum or the Beecroft Art Gallery for local arts and culture, and don't overlook the many different shows at the Palace Theatre or the Cliffs Pavilion.

Woods and Parks to Explore

If the great outdoors is more your scene, you'll be pleased to know Southend boasts many beautiful parks, gardens and woods to enjoy. Take a walk through Belfairs Wood and Nature Reserve, lovely Chalkwell Park, or the ornamental Churchill Gardens. You can even step back in history at Priory Park, which is home to tennis courts, playgrounds and best of all, the Prittlewell Priory Museum. It once formed part of a home for Cluniac monks, dating back to 1180.

The Convenience Factor: Southend Airport and Rail Links

Finally, with so much to see and do, if you decide to call Southend-on-Sea home you'll certainly be welcoming visitors before you know it. Thankfully, London Southend Airport is conveniently located on the edge of town.

Easily accessible in minutes by road or public transport, it's also handy for getaways to the continent. Flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Tenerife and more are serviced regularly by popular budget airlines such as Easyjet.

City workers will be delighted to learn the commute from Southend-on-Sea to London takes under an hour, from either Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street, or Southend Central to London Fenchurch Street, which is walking distance from Tower Hill on the Circle and District lines.

We've only touched on a few of the great attractions in the area, so it's no wonder Southend-on-Sea in Essex is drawing new residents. Hair & Son is happy to help welcome newcomers to the area and match you with an ideal home, whether you're renting or buying.
